The Inquirer 에 따르면 ATi, nVidia 의 그래픽 보드가
애슬론 플랫폼 보다는 인텔 펜티엄4 플랫폼에서 빠르다고 합니다.

The Inquirer 는 ATi FireGL 8800 이나 nVidia 쿼드로4 900/750 등의
전문 OpenGL 그래픽보드의 벤치마크에 비아 KT266A 보드인 EPoX 8KHA+ 를 사용하여 Spec Viewperf 6.12 표준 테스트 등을 실시 할 때
몇몇 이례적으로 이상하다거나 비논리적인 결과를 얻었다고 합니다.

반면 얼마전 실시한 인텔 플랫폼에서의 테스트에서는
상당히 다른 결과를 얻었다고 밝히고 있습니다.

이에 대해 워크스테이션 시장의 80% 를 점유하는 인텔 플랫폼에 대해
ATi, nVidia 가 드라이버 최적화를 하고 있기 때문이라고 보고 있습니다.

AMD 애슬론은 인텔 펜티엄4 에 비해서 상당히 앞서는 FPU 연산력을 가지고 있어 (512KB L2 캐시를 갖는 노스우드에 비하더라도)
렌더링 결과에서 인텔에 앞서야 함을 의미합니다.

The Inquirer 는 그래픽보드 제조회사가 제공하는 드라이버에 따라 퍼포먼스의 차이가 있을 수는 있지만 이번 경우에는 뭔가 좀더 근본적인 원인이 있을 것으로 보고 이를 밝히기 위해 노력중이라고 합니다.

한편 ATi 와 nVidia 도 현재로선 자사의 제품들이 펜티엄4 플랫폼에서 더 빠르다는 것인 인정하고 있다고 하는군요.

WE HAVE RECENTLY benchmarked some professional OpenGl cards, such as the FireGL 8800 card from ATI and the Quadro4 900 and 750, and we did that on Epox board 8KHA+ board with KT266A chipset.
We preferred to use this board in all our previous benchmarketing but we got some extraordinarily strange and non-logical results with some of the cards, especially with Spec Viewperf 6.12 test.

Talking to both ATI and Nvidia over the last few day about these results, I was told that if the cards were used with the Intel platform, the results were very different than using an AMD chip.

There is still room for performance improvement using the FireGL drivers and we expect that later upgrades will include such optimisations.

The reason seems to be that as Intel currently holds about 80 per cent of the workstation market, both Nvidia and ATI optimise their drivers in its favour, and have put AMD work on the back burner, for the high end.

But the AMD Athlon has a far better FPU (floating point unit) than Intel's Pentium 4, even though the latter in its Northwood version has 512K of cache, meaning that the Athlon should give faster rendering results.

So although some of the performance hit may be down to drivers from the graphics card manufacturers, we suspect that there may be some underlying reason which we're trying to figure out.

Meanwhile, both ATI and Nvidia have confirmed that these cards do currently perform better with the Pentium 4 processor.
